Sunday Night

Dear John:

Well we have been having a lot of ufo stories in this area the past few days, thought I would send you a clipping that I had today in the paper. I didn't use the names, because it seems that people who didn't believe in any of this make fun of those who do. The McDaniels saw it for about 45 minutes along with neighbors on their street and that area is right back of my house in fact and all of that area. Just south of this are plenty of people [who] have been seeing things. I have some pretty reliable people who say that they have been seeing things. It seems that a lot of these objects are seen in the [old] power plants, I wonder if this has any bearing on the objects.

Connie had a man attack her as she was leaving her house for school and he tried to get her in the car and tore [her] blouse and scratched her, and they found a note on their porch saying "remember girl I can still get you".

Her mother has been worried and wonder if there could be any bearing on the monster deal.

I heard a story that kids are putting up aluminum foil in colors and looks like lights in the sky, but I didn't think that it would show that plain in the sky.

It sure is raining here tonight, but the weather is real bad and we have plenty of snow the past few weeks and so [It's] cold. It is almost time for spring here. I would like to go to Florida for a week or so, but seems as if [I] cannot get away and if I wait much longer it will [be] just as pretty weather here. I had a chance to come to New York about two weeks ago, but couldn't get away at that time, these friends were going to New York on business and invited me to go along and I would have enjoyed it since I sat here so much.

I will be working for The Messenger if I make that long 25 years May 9 and they are suppose to be having a big party for me, I have enjoyed my work and wouldn't trade my experience for nothing. I am not working tonight had a couple of stories I brought in and sent them for the other girl. I really don't [know] how to act getting Sunday night off. Hope you are feeling well and not working too hard.

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Saturday, March 11th 1967

Note: The column that she mentions is Where The Waters Mingle 3/5/67.

Dear John:

I wrote you a letter last Sunday night, but never did get it mailed as I had your address in another pocketbook and could never think to get it, we have a flood here this week and that keeps me very busy, but we also have the ufo's every night I sure didn't have to have anyone['s] word for this because I saw it for myself as you will read in my enclosed column, this thing was as big as a silo and people by the dozens are seeing it and people are worried, I saw it right close to my office and it went right over two nights straight, now respectable people are seeing it as you will see some of the name[s] that is in my story I had today and my phone at night keeps busy saying "If you look in such a direction you will see a ufo".

Some people who do not see it say that it just a balloon with a candle in it as the civil defense director who saw it last night said, you don't see a balloon changing course as quickly as it did and going the opposite direction of the way the wind of blowing. I understand the men at Kaiser aluminum seen it the other night, workers at the Phillip Sporn Power Plant which is an electrical power plant and also Kyger creek. The lights are different than anything that I have ever seen and the other say so too.

The Register called me yesterday and wanted me to give them a story and also tell them who was with me and just who saw it when I did, but I didn't give it to them as I was busy, they sit there on their lazy cans and wait for people to bring it in. I shall keep you posted.

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Tuesday, March 14th 1967

Note: The “thing” she refers to is a UFO, not Mothman. Ron Hite was covering the UFO wave in The Herald Dispatch of Huntington WV (John marked the clippings “Huntington paper”).

Dear John:

While I am waiting on a fire story, thought perhaps had better get the clippings sent [to] you. They sure are most interesting, perhaps you have most of the data on these happenings other than the recent ones. We are still seeing this thing over Point Pleasant, my husband saw it again and his sister, he is now a believer.

The stories really are similar to what I saw and the other people who saw say so too.

I told my girl friend the other night we were going to have to take a camera and stay out most of the night, if I would had one that night I saw it I sure could [of] taken a photo, while it didn't frighten me at the time I have an odd feeling since that time. Mrs. Bennett's mother cleans for me tomorrow and I will see how she is and maybe I can get out to talk with her, someone told me she had lost so much weight and isn't very well. It seems that the Ron Hite has the theory that this ufo is chasing the chemical and power plants of which the largest power plants in the world are in this area. I think this man in Charleston that is the engineer has a pretty good conception of it.

Many say to me if it has been going on for 75 years why haven't they invaded us before now, I told [them] perhaps they haven't accomplished anything and perhaps never get back to do anything or maybe they haven't perfected just what it takes to find out until now just what [they] can do. There is to be eight articles of Ron Hite and I shall send you the other as they appear in the paper. Hope they will be helpful to you.

Sunday Night

Dear John:

Well heard today that a truck driver saw the same thing I saw Thursday night along the river, but the man didn't get his name, also heard that a man saw this lighted object Friday night near apple grove, but it had white lights, perhaps that is the same thing you seen Friday night and it didn't have its red lights on.

Several women at the luncheon that I attend Saturday said they thought The Register was stupid to print the type of story that they did, and not say who said it. These women are from the very best of families and said "We want you to keep writing any thing that you see or hear about".

I had company during the weekend and also worked tonight so I haven't gotten back out to Gallipolis ferry as yet, but will go one evening this week, don't think I will go tonight as it is after 11 p.m. now and I am sorta tired.

Sending you a clipping, but they cut part of the story for space they said.. same old thing always space problems.

Mabel said we must not give up in seeing if this ufo will come to us, maybe the stupid thing might do just that sometime I sure hope so, but I sure do not want to be alone when it happens. Sorry I left the scene of that one on the river, but guess it frightened me and I left with out realizing I should have stayed.

I really don't think one would have to wait for a pretty night to go look for one and I am very anxious to see if the red object is still to the left of that big field.

This man that told me about a truck driver who said he also heard of a man say he knows that one of these ufo's took his cow, but this stupid man who told me didn't ask the man his name. I told him if he saw the man again to get his name and address. People stand around and hear these stories, but never think to find out who told them, guess I expect people to ask the same questions that I would ask if they were telling me. I arrived back to Point Pleasant in plenty of time for the luncheon. I didn't stop anywhere.

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Friday, April 14th 1967

Friday Night

Dear John:

Well the tnt Thursday night looked like the "monster" event so many cars, students from Marshall university and Ohio university as well as other people.

I really hear of so many sighting I can not keep up with them ....People call all the time wanting to know what I will have in the paper that day on the ufo.

My boss was down Wednesday and said perhaps they should let me write nothing but ufo stories, I told him middleport had the best one of all and the writer there never said a word about, one man claims it landed in his yard, I understand his little five year-old son came in and said daddy there is a butterfly in the backyard, the father was reading and didn't pay any attention and he [said] Oh, but daddy it is big as your car. The father went to look and sure enough there it was... this was told [to] me, I didn't check it out since it isn't in my area and also was told that 150 people saw something on the river just like seen.

I sure hope that one comes down, but do hope that it will be a person who will tell the truth and can describe it. I heard that the Parkersburg had a big story this week on a ufo sighting there when half the town seen it, thought I would write for a copy as I know several people who work on that paper.

Woman just called and said a ufo is going over Point Pleasant it is now 8:45 p.m. She said she'd call me back.

Mrs. McDaniel said if you want to come back you can stay at their house.. they would be very happy to have you, she said she thought Linda and Roger were separating again tonight. Really don't think it will ever work out for the two, but at least she gave it a try. Another call guess I had better go see what it looks like.

As ever, Mary

P.s. Did you ever read or hear anything about an Indian in Pittsburgh who claims he was in outer space or another planet for four years? A woman told me that it was in the Pittsburgh paper sometime last summer or maybe later than that. He said he didn't want to come back but they brought him back anyway.

Sunday Night

Dear John:

Well it has been one beautiful day here today and everyone in Point Pleasant and Gallia county was out ufo hunting last night my phone just about rang off the wall and also today, people are really becoming interested and want to know just what this object is.

Fay, my sister, saw her first one last night and it was at New Haven. She went out in the yard about 10 p.m. to get her dog and there it was, she said there were several and they did play around in the sky and they were all colors.

I am really happy she got to see one as she wanted to so badly.. now it is people you just wouldn't believe that are going out looking for them. It seems now that they are as about as active as they were that first Saturday night you and I saw them at Gallipolis ferry.

Friday night after I talked with you I went out to Camp Conley and there were about 500 people in that and the tnt area, this Ron Hite from the Huntington paper was there and some guy was with him from Washington, D.C.

I didn't find out for sure who the man was from Washington, they seem to want to be by themselves, but was very hard to do with that many, honestly they were going everyway Friday night and this couldn't possibly be planes nor anything but ufo's.

I don't know is this is true but they say the workers at the Philip Sporn plant have saw what they call a mother ship and three little ships... I understand that one man said "Oh hell, there isn't such a thing" but when he saw it he went home and never has came back to work. They have told me different times about plant workers seeing it but they are very careful to tell it because they are afraid of their job as some bossman might not like it especially if he's a non-believer, I shall keep you posted and sending along a clipping I had in today's paper.

As ever, Mary

Note: The included column was Where The Waters Mingle from 4/30/67.

Dear John:

You know how stupid I am...My column Sunday suddenly dawned on me that could have been the beginning of this whole puzzle here in this area of the headless man, just in case you didn't read it I will send you a clipping of it.. this is in Jackson county and part of it is Mason county. I guess a few people have seen lights as usual being reported.

They will appear now that the weather is beginning to get a little better, I was out of town Monday and the evening also so, I didn't have any contacts and Sunday I had such a headache later in the day, I think I am cracking up I cannot seem to get that thick-glasses man out of my mind, I guess he will be coming for me and if they all look like him I do not want to go.

When they come for me I will let you know.

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Thursday, May 4th 1967

Thursday Night

Dear John,

Well it has been so rainy here this week and I haven’t been out, but hope to go out for a while tonight. Mrs. Lilly said they had seen two tonight.

Do you recall Mrs. Lilly telling that a Mrs. Mary Wheeler had seen something in Camp Conley, well I saw her today and asked her about [it] and [she] described it to me and it's identical of the same thing I seen on the river that night. She said the thing went around-and-around with a white light enclosed was a orange light.

I sure wish to have stayed that night I saw it on the river bank, but guess I wasn’t brave enough to stay by myself.

A man told me last night that we should build a UFO port and maybe one would land on it.

Maxine is using the typewriter tonight and you will never read this writing. She and one of the police are going out to see if they can see a UFO, I told them I doubt if they look.

I am going with Dr. Oliver and one of the police I will never get back, because none of us ever know the time of day.

If anything exciting occurs I shall let you know.

As ever, Mary H.

P.S.  Guess we are going to celebrate my 25th year with the Messenger next Tuesday.  MH

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Thursday, May 11th 1967

Note: Clippings weren't in envelope; John must've filed them elsewhere.

Pt. Pleasant

Dear John:

Well the UFO's were really out last night! I was driving out 22nd Street about 11 p.m. and suddenly the brightest object was right in front of me very low and just to the north of it was this orange colored one.

I haven’t seen one just like this bright color before.

Many others reported sighting[s] also last night (I was sober, although I had a very big day, celebrating my 25 anniversary).

It seems I can never think of half the things that happen to me when I write or talk with you. Friday night, the same night I seen the thick-lens glasses man, my telephone on 695-1560 line performed a strange thing.  When I call[ed] out I use the 695-4543 phone, Scotty called me on that phone as it's not listed and said my 1560 phone was out of order.  I picked up the phone and dialed the 1560 number and the operator

said the line is busy, well the operator don’t tell the line is busy unless she[s] calling long distance, I told it was right on my desk and most certainly was not busy. The operator gave me the service department and she said it was OK and for to [me] dial again, but the same thing happened, and again gave me the operator and we went through the same thing. It was near midnight. I gave up and went home, and called from home and the same thing happened. The next morning it was the same thing and [I] told [the] phone was not busy and said wait a minute and in about five minutes the phone rang and no one answers, but dialed the number and answered it and believe or not it was OK.

I guess the best thing for me to do is give up or should I stay with it?

Linda and Roger one night heard the noise or sound like a heart beat.

I too heard this (sound) and thought it was my heart pounding although I never have an[y] ill effects from [my] heart. Not saying that I won’t, but I thought it very strange and was about the same hour 3 a.m. in [the] morning. I still say if they want me — come and get me!

I haven’t had time [to] talk with Mrs. Bowen. This is a busy week, I have [a] lot of meetings the first week of the month, but I shall do it soon.

I have received so many calls congratulating me on my 25 anniversary.

Sending you a clipping of the tribute the Messenger paid me, of which I am very proud. When I die I don’t need flowers as I have received mine while I live.

My house looks like a flower shop with the beautiful arrangements I received, I hope am worthy of the praise I received.

Without my friends I could never have accomplished it.

Also sending a clipping of a UFO in today’s paper.

John if I have any clipping you need please let me know, even if [I] only have one you can always send them back after you make a copy.

Do you feel that someone knew what you had in your car and wanted it for information or to destroy it?

It has worried me, I really don’t see what they would want with your note books and clippings, or perhaps they just took everything and didn’t give a damn what they took.

I am writing this letter while sitting under [a] hair dryer.

As ever, Mary

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Sunday, May 14th 1967

Note: Letter sent on May 14th, returned and sent again on May 20th.

Sunday Night

Dear John:

Well the ufo's are at it again. Last night (Saturday) it was seen in many places in the county. A girl friend of mine who works in the pentagon was home for the weekend and she really seen one.

You know the area that Belva's brother found the silvery stuff that she gave you, that is where this girl seen it. She said she was traveling along and suddenly there was these two bright lights and they were on a hill and apparently it had landed on a hill. She said that she looked at it for a while and rushed home to her sister and brother-in-law and told them.

They all returned to the scene and it was still there and they watched it for a while and studied it for a while deciding if they should try and go to it and when they started toward it, and it suddenly started gliding down the hill and vanished out of site immediately.

Kathleen said she was never a believer and they had about teased her to death in Washington about the "big bird", and she wouldn't dare tell them in Washington about seeing this. I guess the lights were so bright they were almost blinding.

A very prominent man came to me Friday and said that in the Mt. Vernon, Lincoln and Jefferson avenue area a lot of old people live there and get up all hours of the night and have been seeing these real bright lights near the window and it about frightens them to death.

Also a couple of women have also reported the same thing in the downtown section. This man said he also goes out to the tnt area all the time and has seen a lot and last week he said that he saw three airplanes one night and six ufo's and no one will ever tell him that they are planes.

I was real surprised at this man and also have learned that a lot of educated and prominent people are very concerned and believe that something will happen here before too long and I too, believe it will.

I dreamed last night that this big thing came down and got me. It looked like a big hopper that opened up and picked me up... back of the big hopper it had a big thing that looked like a thrashing machine with three lights on the side.

It sure was a wild dream and where such a description came from I do not know as I haven't seen any thing like it. I had been to Huntington and came back and went to bed at 10 p.m. and didn't get up until 1:30 p.m today.

If people would tell all they know I think we could piece it together much sooner, but too many people are afraid that people will laugh at them. Belva is still seeing it at Gallipolis Ferry and I was talking on the phone with her this evening and she said wait a minute some one is at the door, she returned and said there isn't anyone there... she said this has happened several times.

It has also happened at my house, and Friday night there was a loud noise like something fell on the porch and when we went to look to see what it was there wasn't a thing in sight. The noise was on the porch not in the road or yard.

Linda and Roger are still hearing the heart beat, but I haven't heard it only that one night. If Linda doesn't get straightened up from hearing noises she will have a nervous breakdown.

I plan to write a little story to night on the ufo's but wont dare say that the girl from the pentagon seen it, because people would know who it is. Her sister and husband didn't believe such thing existed until they seen it themselves.

I will go out in that area one night this week if I can get out of the office early enough...

It is back at the tnt area. I have a busy week, school board Monday night, Tuesday night awards night at the high school, Wednesday night class night at the highschool, Thursday a band banquet and Friday night graduation exercise at the school.

I shall keep you posted on the happenings.. Were the drawings of the Bowen children stolen?

As ever, Mary

John: This letter was returned. I didn't get through to the address, but it had some information I wanted you to know. I haven't found out the details, but I heard that five people saw "Moth man" last night, May 19. If they did I will let you know. Several people have reported seeing the ufo's this week. Mrs. McDaniel said she had been trying to call me, I have been out for the week, but should be in more now. If the 675-1560 is busy call on this 675-4545. Sorry haven't made contact with you - Mary

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Wednesday, May 17th 1967

Note: John wrote “phones” on the envelope, clippings filed elsewhere. Keel saved some “space grass” (radar chaff) from Pt Pleasant 1966.

Wednesday Evening

Dear John:

Just arrived back to the office from an hour's conference on the radio on the political issue of this forthcoming city election. The press took issues of both the present mayor and his opponent. Perhaps they will have me after the questions I asked.

Sending you a clipping of a ufo sighting of which I told you about and also have heard of others seeing this same bright light in that area. Someone told Lewis Summers wife had seen one, but I haven't called Lewis to see if it is true.

I would like to write a story on that "space grass" of which I never did. Do you think it would be ok if I did and tell about what they said it was and what the Pentagon told you?

I haven't heard if the people went to the hill where they saw this thing land or not, but they said they were going to go and see if they could see anything.. they have [a] sight party phone line and they do not like to discuss it with me on the phone.

Too, they are afraid someone will tell the pentagon about one of their employees seeing it and she will get fired as she works for some general I think. If I should tell them they would tell her to keep it from anyone and not allow her to discuss it with anyone.

I read your article in Saga and enjoyed it very much.. doubt if your news stories will appear in any of the papers locally. It has been raining here and about every day and night and it's hard to see anything when it rains although Saturday night it was sorta bad.

Yesterday, May 16 a woman called me and said I have called you about six times and the operator tells me your phone is out of order, but finally she called and the call came in ok...as far as I know nothing was wrong or at least if there was any trouble I didn't know anything about it.

I have told you more and more people are out watching for ufo's and feel that they sooner or later come in contact with it and who knows maybe they will...sure hope someone comes in contact with it and also that it is someone who will observe it closely.

As ever, Mary

Note: "One" over her house meaning a UFO, clippings filed elsewhere.

Wednesday Night

Dear John:

Since we have some more sightings, I thought I had better send you some clippings. I really believe the "Monster" is back again. A man called me at 3 a.m. Tuesday morning and said that one was over my house and I got up and there it was and when I looked at it away it went to a higher degree and out of sight....

I guess they watch me while I sleep.

Another man called me and said that a man claims that while traveling between Ravenswood and Parkersburg near Ravenswood (didn't know the date) was taken for a ride in a ufo. He talked at a lodge meeting in Parkersburg to about 250 persons according to the story.

He said they took him for a five hour trip and there were five men on it that talked with him. The man said at the lodge meeting they had a question and answer period and the man very quickly answered all the questions they asked him and said he was told that it cost 27 cents for fuel for the five hour trip.

He doesn't know the man's name, but is trying to find out.. I ask[ed] him if [it] could be Derenberger and he said it wasn't.. I hope he can find out his name for me and I will go and talk with him.

The weather is beginning to clear up here now and perhaps there will be a lot of sightings. I have been very busy as May is a busy month for me, but is slowing down a little now and perhaps I can get out a little more.

I shall keep you posted.

As ever, Mary

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Sunday, May 28th 1967

Note: Mrs. Bennett is Mothman witness Marcella Bennett featured in Strange Creatures chapter 18 and Mothman Prophecies chapter 6.

SUNDAY NIGHT

Dear John:

Received your letter today and it was very interesting to hear of your adventures on Long Island and sure hope you get in contact with one of them, if they are in communications with what is going on [on] this earth it is very possible they would love to talk with you.

I had a letter from Stephanie and she said they have sightings over there and she is watching while on her plane trip as an airline hostess... and will inform me if  she ever sees anything.

Some of my letters must have gone astray as I sent you a second clipping of Hazel and also one of my anniversary I will send another one just in case you didn't receive the second one.

Linda sued Roger for a divorce yesterday and she is pregnant... the McDaniels are very upset. I just stopped writing to talk with my district editor and he told the space in the paper was as crowded as two pregnant women in a phone booth. He is a card and I love to work with him.

Mrs. Bowen sent me word she wants to talk with me and don't believe she told you everything as she didn't know you... maybe she has a contact and will tell me I am going to see her one afternoon this week.. also Mrs. Bennett didn't tell us everything that day we talked to her as she was afraid to, but I think she is going to tell me more.. I believe this monster is trying to make contact with her.. she has complete spells that she don't know what she is thinking or what happened during that period... and says if something doesn't happen soon she is going completely out of her mind.

Do you think there is a possibility that she may be in contact with it or when she has these blank spells that it could be the cause of it and she still goes to the doctor, but she hasn't told him. I think she is afraid to tell him, that something might happen if she does. I plan to go back out there, oh if I just had more time I think I could uncover a little more of the details, but it takes hours and hours to work on these things and that I don't have.

I haven't found out the man's name who [was] supposedly [...] taken up in one near Ravenswood. I know what you mean by having to work and not travel because it really costs and if you spend it all in research is very unprofitable to write the stories, but should anything unusual happen here I shall contact you at once, especially if one takes me up, that is if I live to tell it.

The temperature was near 100 degrees here today and if the heat brings them out we should be seeing a lot now. This typewriter is a mess and when [it] come[s] from the teletype and [I] try to type [my] fingers wont work that fast as [...] it [needs] a magic touch.

I have worked the past two Saturday nights.. had a board of education meeting until 1 a.m. this morning and told the boss a few minutes ago I was taking off on Tuesday and [he] said I could which does not count on my vacation.

Maxine and I have some friends that want to come to New York with them in August, but we don't want to come with them as we would have to do just what they say and they don't like to do the same things we do.. stay up all night and sleep half the day.. they would go to bed at dark and get up at daylight.

We might go to New York in August or October but we wont tell them, we are not sure what we want to do, we always enjoy our selves when [we] go there, but it depends on what time of the year we take it. My sister-in-law wants us to go to the beach and that would be ok but I always get sick from the sun and so does Maxine. We haven't been on vacation since years before last and we sure do need one.

Belva claims she still sees things, but as I said she may only be seeing a star I shall keep you posted.

Good luck

Mary

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Friday, June 2nd 1967

Point Pleasant

June 2, 1967

Dear John:

Well things are really happening here again. Last night about 11 p.m. I heard this noise of someone coming up on my porch with a girl saying "Mary come here quickly" it was Brenda. She said there is a ufo right here near your house and [I] rushed out and there it was a big bright shining thing and it just kept getting bigger and close and we could see an outline of it and it looked like it a had something like a stove pipe on the top of it. We watched it for a few minutes and it was in the west near my house and very low. [...] Then we heard the sound of a plane coming from the east and soon saw it come in sight and when we heard the sound this thing disappeared or turned off its light instantly.

I heard planes going every way for an hour more after that and there isn't any scheduled at that time that just keeps flying over the area and what they were doing I don't know. But this thing is just like the one I told you about seeing on 22nd street that followed me home.

The kids Brenda, Linda and another girl were stopped just north of the city limits on Route 62 talking with some other kids when this thing came at them and nearly frightened them out of their pants. They came to the drive-in and then went back and it appeared again and then they rushed back to my house to tell me.

Also this week on Wednesday the police got a call from a woman in the Jerry's run area that a plane had crashed on a hill near them the night before and wanted [them] to come investigate it.. I don't think she had a phone to call when it happened. The sheriff and the state police went to the area and could not find a thing nor were there any scheduled flights, planes lost or missing. They said the people in that area said they heard this whistling sound then seen this big bright flash and that was all that happened.. I bet it was a ufo landing, don't you? In the first place a plane doesn't make a whistling sound and also not a sudden big light flash. By air [this] hill wouldn't be too far from the Gallipolis sight and also the area isn't too far from where we went to get the ufo grass from those people. By air where they live also would be close to the ufo sighting place at Gallipolis ferry.

I am sure you will send the little red wagon for me when I tell you this, but at least I told Mabel my dream before it came true.. I was beginning to think maybe I was having illusions, but I really knew that I would wake up [sometimes] crying and very excited and then I was sure that I had dreamed it. As I have told you I have dreamed several times of being taken up in a ufo.. well this one time I dreamed that I told this man that I was afraid to go as I might have another heart attack or blood pressure would go up and cause me to have one.. in my dream he told me that it wouldn't happen that when I went back for my check I was going to be better.

Wednesday I went for my checkup and the doctor always tells me what my blood pressure is and he said Mary what in the world has happened to you your blood pressure is down to normal and my blood sugar usually stayed around 140 which was not alarming, but 115 is normal and this time it was 94 and I know I looked at him like I was shot, I ask[ed] him what caused the sudden change, because this has been going on since my fathers sudden death ten years ago and I have taken the same medicine since that time and haven't changed it.. he said he didn't know.

I am sure I haven't been in a ufo, but it seems strange that would happen after all these years, maybe they are after me and trying to kill me off, although this is good news. The doctor was happy for me. I almost told him about my dream, but didn't I was afraid he would throw me out. [?] [...]

Don't write anything about this.... I will tell my doctor the next time I go back.

Sincerely,

Mary

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Tuesday, June 6th 1967

Dear John:

Have a few minutes while I am waiting for city election [?]... Sending you a clipping on a story I had in Monday's paper, If I don't send them as I write them I will [?], although it may not be of any interest to you.

I was out late enough last night to look for ufos, but I don't think I could have seen one I was so tired. [I] had [a] school board meeting around 1 a.m. and when I finished it was 3:30 a.m. Then a friend of mine from Cincinnati came along and wanted me to go to New York with her. She was going there to see her boy friend. She has a new [Cadillac], but I could never keep up with her or him, they will be drunk from the time she arrives until she leaves.

It's not that I am against drinking, I just like to be sober part of the time.

They are two lonely people, he lost his wife and she her husband and they have so much money they don't know what to do with it. I never take advantage of it as it would not get me one penny, but I always have been simple, I just hope she makes it there.

Maxine said if one of the ufo's offer to take me away, I will say perhaps later, but not tonight and that is when she is going to shoot me. Dr. Oliver called me today and said he was asking his wife for a divorce, said he would let me know what she says, plenty I am sure, because she had a good living.

Mabel said if you ever come back to West Virginia again you can stay at their house, and she really means just what she says, if they didn't want you they wouldn't ask you.

If anything exciting happens, I will let you know.

Please forgive the poor writing I have taken to mailing notes in my own shorthand.

Sincerely, Mary

John, I will be sending you a good ufo story written by a Parkersburg man soon. M. H.

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Wednesday, June 7th 1967

Pt. Pleasant W.Va.

Sunday Night

Dear John:

Well I think the monster has arrived back in Point Pleasant again. Four boys were on a camping out on Lewis Street (next to the Appalachian office) Friday night and at 3 a.m. they got up for something and saw this big gray thing that was about six or seven feet tall... It nearly frightened them out of their pants.

They said it sounded like it flapped its wings about three times and then flew out of sight. The boy[s] took off for home and sat up all night in one of the boys kitchens or rather from 3 a.m. on.

My sister, Fay at New Haven said she and [her] neighbor saw this bright light and a short distance from it was a blue and white light and they watched it move for a little while about 11:30 p.m. and it suddenly disappeared.

The next day which was last Friday they said this plane came over their house and almost hit the tree tops and they could read on it "u.s. air force" other people have reported seeing air force planes flying low. I would think if they were on a flying mission they wouldn't be flying so low.

I saw one coming back from Gallipolis. The other day I saw this strange plane, nothing like I had ever seen before, perhaps it was a u.s. air force plane. People report so much any more I would have to be two people to keep them checked out.

Hope you are having success with sightings there. I also heard of another plane that is supposed of have fallen in the strip mines over back to Cheshire, but no one could ever find it.

Perhaps they are ufo landings and they wouldn't check it out or at least I doubt if they looked very much.

I shall keep you informed of the happenings, if I hear of them.

Sincerely,

Mary

A Letter from Mary Hyre - Friday, June 9th 1967

Point Pleasant

June 9, 1967

Dear John:

I am not worth a darn writing today everything I have written I have made a mistake, so I gave it up. It has been very hot here today and we could use some of that rain we had a few days ago.

Tuesday night when I was taking Maxine home we saw two ufo's and something different this time. She lives close to a big hill and we were driving out this street and I noticed something through the trees before us.

I told Maxine that there was something unusual tree level on the hill over from us so we stopped in the street and there it was. It was round not like a star and orange in color at times and at times it looked red, it was moved southeast then move back and would be little for a while then it would change color and get bigger.

While watching it suddenly there was this very odd color blue light that flashed three times at us, then it disappeared and then again it showed up in another place and did that repeatedly for several time each time like a signal flash.

Finally it moved southward again then went directly north the fastest thing I had ever seen in the sky. When the blue object left the red light disappeared dimly out of sight.

I have seen green lights, but not the blue that color. I didn't have sense enough to flash my car lights, I guess you think later what you should have done.

We watched them for at least 15 minutes and get out of the car to make sure that it was not a reflection, it seems that the thing wont stay away from Point Pleasant. I didn't write anything about it this time, although people want to know all over our reading area why I don't have something every day, I guess they think I can create something.

Well I think I will get drunk, a guy just brought me a fifth that I won on a bet. I have one in the drawer that hasn't been opened. I told Maxine guess we would have to have a party.

Will keep you posted on the sightings.

Sincerely,

Mary
